The Ultimate Guide to Feeding Your Pug Fruit | Can Pugs Eat This Fruit?

Many pug owners like to give their companions the occasional fresh fruit or vegetable as a snack, myself included. After all, they’re healthy for us so they must be good for our pugs too right?

This simply is not true, as pugs don’t have the same nutritional requirements as humans, so foods that are good for us are not necessarily good for them, and may even be toxic.

Although fresh fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients, if your pug is fed a well balanced diet they shouldn’t need any additional vitamins or minerals. You can check out my personal recommendation for a well-balanced diet for pugs here.

Evidence suggests that dogs are naturally carnivores, so feeding them too many fruits can upset their digestive system, especially as they are high in natural sugar. The key to feeding your pug fruit is moderation, they should be an occasional treat only, rather than a dietary staple.

A widely used rule of thumb is The 10% Rule – Treats in general should not make up more than 10% of your pug’s diet, in terms of calories.

All treats, including fruit, should not make up more than 10% of your pug's diet.

Here are some general tips to safely prepare fruit to give your pug;

  1. Make sure that the fruit is not toxic to pugs (keep reading to find out).
  2. Wash the fruit before serving, as it’s likely to be covered with pesticides and other harmful chemicals.
  3. Seeds and stems should always be removed. Many fruit seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides that convert to hydrogen cyanide which is toxic. Small amounts such as a couple of apple seeds are unlikely to have noticeable effect, but over time it can accumulate to dangerous levels.
  4. Cut the flesh of the fruit into small bite sized pieces to minimize risk of choking.
  5. Give small portions only, as eating too much fruit at once can lead to an upset stomach due to the high fiber.
  6. Always prepare the fruit without any additional seasoning, preservatives, added sugar, spices, etc.
  7. If you’re introducing a new fruit to your pug, give them a small serving, and observe them for visible signs of allergic reaction or unusual behavior.
  8. If unsure, always consult your vet first before adding anything new to your pug’s diet.

Some fruit can be used as snacks or supplements but should not replace a well balanced diet

What Is The Ideal Fruit Snack For Pugs?

With so many fruit to choose from, how do you know which one is the right snack for your pug?

  • Low calories. As you will know by now, pugs are very susceptible to obesity. It doesn’t just end there though, as pugs tend to have thin legs relative to their bodies, senior pugs are at risk of developing arthritis.
  • Low sugar. Fruits tend to have natural sugars, called fructose, in varying levels. Too much sugar in a pug’s diet may not only lead to obesity, but also other problems such as dental cavities, diabetes, and metabolic conditions.
  • High in dietary fiber. The benefits of fiber to pugs, other than the fact that it helps with the digestive process, is that it helps maintain the feeling of “fullness”, which can go a little way to suppress their seemingly never-ending appetite.
  • Hydrating. As pugs are especially susceptible to overheating in the heat, a fruit snack can help them keep hydrated, as fruits tend to contain a high composition of water.
  • Non-toxic. This one is quite self-explanatory, right? But how do you know what fruits fit these criteria? I’ve done the research for you! Keep reading to find out.
